In support of our local Muay Thai scene two of our Malaysian Tigers participated in Kelantan recently.

IFMA gold medalist Malaysian Tiger Hasrul Hisham beat Boro Black Tiger by a KO in round 3.

Malaysian Tiger Ejo beat Anak Tiung by KO in round 2.

Overal it they were clean fights with no injuries sustain by The Tigers, we would like to thank the organisers for the invite and let us work together to support the local Muay Thai scene. Syabas guys.

Malaysian Tiger Mohd Ali Yaakub fought the first match of the night in the 'Thai vs Challenger' series. Ali downed his Thai opponent in the 3rd round, being the only 'Challenger' of the night beating a Thai. The poster says defending national pride...good job Ali.

Mohd Sukri Hassan lost today to Belarus though we all feel he should have won. Only natural though cause we always see the best of our fighters. The fighter from Belarus got 2 standing counts in the second round and it seems Ejo did a lot of damage as his opponent hobbled out of the ring.

Abuza losses to a Dutch fighter. Seems it was a well matched fight but apparently Abuza was subjected to 2 standing counts in the second round, which led to his eventual loss. All in all a great fight!!!

Ali losses to the Russian fighter Ruslan Yusubov, the current World Champion. It was a 50/50 fight that could have swung either way. Unfortunately luck was with Ruslan.

The IFMA Muaythai World Champs is now in full swing with our Malaysian fighters ready and waiting to face fighters from all corners of the world.

Ali will be fighting the Russian fighter that he lost to last year, Ruslan Yusubov, The present IFMA World Champion. To be fair it was Ali's first amateur fight last year. Let's hope this year bodes better for Ali. He is to fight Ruslan on Sunday.

Ejo will fight Pavel Marozau of Belarus, 48-51kg. Hasrul Hisham Aziz will fight Mussin Didar of Kazakhstan , Mohd Nazaruddin Che will fight Wingban of Hong Kong, and Abuza,57-60kg,will fightAnibal Francisco Cianciaruso of Argentina.

Unfortunately our Malaysian Tiger Faizal Ramli lost to Joshua Palmer to due to the chaos that ensued following his missed his flight. Faizal having to fight directly after arriving in Bangkok. Josh Palmer had lost Wes Jaya in the Z1 fights.

Faizal Ramli of the Malaysian Tigers lost to Vuyisile Colossa of South Africa in a close fight last night in Macau. Faizal put up a good fight going the 5 rounds only narrowly losing to Vuyisile who is know for going up agaisnt Yodsenklai, although Vuyisile inevitably losing to Yod he managed to go all 5 rounds!

This was a Thai Kings Cup Qualifier fight.

The classes at The Malaysian Tigers Gym are conducted by our experienced Thai coaches, all ex-champions, and some like Mardsue who is known to to come coach at our gym on occasion are current champions.

Our Malaysian Tigers also help out in conducting some of the classes. Ali, Faizal, Hamdan to name a few.

Though I must admit, its kinda intimidating training with these guys but I know if I train with the best some of their skills are going to rub off on me!!! Anyway what better way to get my mind off work cause these guys keep me on my toes. I get a great work out and I know I'm one step closer to being a better tougher me. Hey maybe someday I'll be a Malaysian Tiger.....well everyone is allowed to dream right!

Kickboxer bounces back with victory over Australian No. 1

MALAYSIAN Tigers’ Mohd Ali Yaakub registered a significant breakthrough at the Supremacy Part Eight in Perth, Australia, recently.
Even the five previous defeats against foreign challengers from Australia, Britain, Russia and Thailand in a higher weight category failed to deter the 23-year-old kickboxer from bouncing back strongly to edge Australian number one Chris “Tiger” White in the 57kg bout.
It was also sweet victory for Ali as he avenged his teammate Mohd Muinuddin Khadir’s (King of Sharks) earlier defeat against the local favourite.
White almost knocked out the heavier Muinuddin featuring in the 63kg section on that occasion.
Ali, who weighs only 54kg, said he was confident going into the ring because his 34-year-old trainer Rung Makate from Thailand took on White twice in his competitive career before going into coaching.
“I had a solid build up with the exposure to gauge my strength against stiffer opponents. I have gained valuable experience losing to them,” he said.
Intense: Ali concentrates as he tries to land a kick on his coach.
The aggressive White came out charging at Ali to flex his command in the opening round. After an impressive start, he slowed down and opted for a more cautious approach.
“We knew that he was fast. He tried coming in close and combining his shots in the first round.
“In the next round, he was running around the ring evading the assaults. Although Rung did not accompany me for the outing, he told me to take it easy and conserve my energy in the first two rounds before going all out to produce a strong finish in the last three rounds,” Ali said.
In the encounter that went the full distance of five rounds of three minutes each, Ali won the judges’ approval with his clear domination.
World Muay Thai Council (WMC) vice-president Stephen Fox, who witnessed Ali in action, praised him for applying a smart strategy to emerge as the clear winner in three of the five rounds.
“Ali is a complete exponent with sound techniques and skills to approach the fight with plenty of variation. He took his opportunities well on the counter attack. He was not afraid in moving forward to create the opening.
“When the fight was at its peak in the fourth round, White found it hard to cope with Ali’s pace,” Fox said.
In the penultimate round, the highly rated Malaysian contender troubled his opponent, connecting a forceful blow with his elbow on White’s right eye.
“I wanted to strike him in the centre of his forehead. But, it was enough to disrupt his focus and momentum in staying in contention,” said Ali.
Currently, Ali is going through the paces under Rung to prepare for his next assignment at the International Federation of Muay Thai Amateur (IFMA) World Championships in Bangkok at the end of November.
In addition, he will be having a crack at securing the WMC Inter-Continental belt when he takes on the European champion at Singapore on Dec 12.
Ali will be out to make amends after his setback in the opening bout at the world amateur meet last year.
“He is one of the top exponents in his category (51 to 54kg). But, he needs to maintain his high work rate going through the training sessions twice-a-day, six-days-a-week.
Besides the three sparring sessions in a week, Ali’s physical regime includes a 10km run every day and sprinting drills to increase his endurance and speed respectively.

Surprise of the night....after the Mohd Ali Yaakub and Chris White fight the judges announce a draw.When the judgement was announced everyone was in disbelief, feeling that Ali should have won. Chris White being a true sportsman came up and hugged Ali and gave his trophy to him announcing to the crowd that Ali was the one who deserved to win. Everyone cheered supporting Ali and also cheered in support of Chris's amazing sense of sportmanship.

This is what Muay Thai is all about, true sportsmanship and true heros, congatulations to Ali and Chris for showing an outstanding amount of both attributes.

Muaythai friends, once again October will witness some fantastic muaythai events from all over the globe!!

First of all, congratulations must go out to the South American Muaythai Confederation for organising the South American Confederation Cup in Chile. A big thank you to the confederation for organising yet another successful and spectacular event.

OCTOBER ACTION!!!

Hong Kong will see two mega events this month with Planet Battle on the 7th and the WMC I-1 Grand Slam on the 22nd.

Australia will have two major events with Evolution 18 for the first time in Melbourne and Supremacy in Perth.

The 10th of October will see a fantastic event blending both amateur and professional muaythai bouts in the beautiful city of Torino, host city of the 2006 Winter Olympics.

October 16th will see world class Muay Thai comes back to Calgary. Promoted by CAKMA and Mike Miles Muay Thai, H2H PUNISHMENT promises to be a great night out at the fights.
The United States will be witnessing another international event in Santa Clara, California.

October 31st will see the 3rd Venezuelan Muaythai Championships in San Cristobal City.

Germany will see another King’s Cup Challenge which will decide who will be the representing Germany at His Majesty the King of Thailand’s birthday event.

Malaysia will see the opening of the Z-1 Series.

With so many world class events this month and even more to follow in November, it truly is a testament to the growth of our sport, so let’s keep it up, promoting top class international events!!!

IFMA World Championship 2009

The IFMA World Championships is coming up soon. This year it will be held in Bangkok in honour of His Majesty the King of Thailand's 82nd birthday.

It has been a year since Hamdan Mokhtar, Mohd Ali Yaakub and Khoo Meng Yang participated in the IFMA World Championships, held in Busan, Korea. Khoo Meng Yang brought back a bronze medal. Mohd Ali and Hamdan only losing to the World Champions their respective categories.

Then we participated in the IFMA Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia. Here our team won the 'Most Improved Team' award. Our fighters did well with Faizal Ramli and Mohd Ali Yaakub winning gold medals, Mohd Noramin ,silver and Ismail Ramli, Mohd Sukri(Ejo) and Mohd Azwan(Bob) with bronze medals.

Yet again we will be sending a team to participate in these the World Championships. The participation criteria and weight categories are as listed below-

Everyone thought Ali would get koed by Daddy Kool as what happened to Chris White twice and Aaron Leigh the other Oz champion but Ali proved them all wrong. Ali was not in top form and seemed to have lost his rythm. Maybe due to the disruption to his training routine due to ramadhan but he still gave Daddy Kool a hard time although Daddy Kool controlled most of the rounds with his highly technical fighting skills which makes him still the number 1 fighter in Australia. Never-the-less Ali was honoured to be invited to fight in the Evolution 17 and he fought so well the Australians want him back!!! Ali will fight for the Super 8 championship in Oz very soon.

On another note Cosmo Alexander from Brazil, surprised everyone by beating John Wayne Parr in the semi final and Tum Madsua in the final to be the first fighter to qualify for the Thai Kings Cup Super 8 in Bangkok on the 5th of December.

Saturday the 29th of August is the date fight fans have been looking forward to all year. Evolution 17 brings with it a hard-hitting, action packed card as usual. The best of the best, champions from Australia and across the world.

For one night the Sleeman Centre in Chandler will emulate the battleground of the Coliseum in ancient Rome where our gladiators will fight for reputation, honour and respect. A combination of world champion Muay Thai fighters, glamorous ringside models, a bumping sound system, lighting and visual displays and thousands of fans screaming to back their favorite fighters will ensure the aura of Evolution continues.

The feature at Evolution 17 is a Super 8 Tournament. Eight fighters, the winner must win 3 fights in one night. There are guaranteed to be some wars with three current/former WMC World Title holders in John Wayne Parr, Eugene ‘Boom Boom’ Ekkelboom, and Cosmo Alexander taking on veteran brawlers like the Preacher and Dzhabar. The Head Hunter

From the jungles to the ring, this pint-sized Malaysian kickboxer could be Asia’s next Contender

As Bernard Radin steps into the ring, the world goes quiet. He is in a forest of calm and instinct. “There’s nothing, just you and your opponent. You just forget about everything.” Months spent training 30 hours a week have primed him for this. For the next few minutes, he is in a place he describes as his happiest. ‘The Head Hunter’ is back in business.

Fusing the athleticism of karate with the raw power of boxing, muay thai, or Thai kickboxing, is one of the world’s most explosive and physically intense sports — never more so than when it’s practised by a knockout specialist, intent on felling his opponent well before the referee calls time. At five feet seven inches tall, Radin is not physically imposing on first impression. But the intensity of his stare is at first unsettling, fused with a smile that seldom leaves his face. Through body language alone, Radin gives you the impression that he is ready for anything.

We discuss the reality TV show The Contender Asia, a muay thai variation on the original American boxing show, in which Radin is a contestant in the second season. Filmed on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, the series is the brainchild of co-producer Mark Burnett, the British guru behind competition-based reality shows like Survivor and The Apprentice. The Contender Asia pits 16 top muay thai fighters against each other, with contestants eliminated weekly, until there are just two standing for the finale. Producers say Radin is the most likely Asian winner in a talent pool that includes the world’s best.

At 37 years old, Radin is also the show’s oldest competitor. Two years ago, he watched the first season of the TV show from his couch. “I was a retired fighter by then. I told my wife, ‘I’ll be in season two’. She looked at me and laughed — but if you want something to happen, it will happen.”

Life did not start out easy for Radin, and he has beaten the odds before. His Iban mother married a German man, whom he has never met, returning to her remote Sarawak village after she became pregnant. At three days old, Bernard was left in the hands of his grandmother, raised in their traditional Borneo longhouse. His childhood was split between hunting, tending to rice paddies, and journeying to school by canoe. Growing up with mixed parentage at the time was not easy, he says, and he was often in fights for looking different from other kids.

By the age of 13, he moved to Ipoh in peninsular Malaysia, to live with his mother. They didn’t see eye to eye, and Radin often slept on the streets.

Then at 14 he tried out the Korean martial art of taekwando, and something in him clicked. He started winning bouts, then national titles and regional medals. Later, he tried Chinese kickboxing, then muay thai.

Through competition, he gained the respect of others, and greater self-confidence. He also met his wife, Surina Adman. The couple now run an academy gymnasium in Perak, two hours from Kuala Lumpur. Proving that a troubled kid from the jungle can compete in the big league is a major motivation for Radin in The Contender Asia. “I really want to show a lot of youngsters that I’m coming from nothing too. Look at what I did.”

Preparing for the show was a hard road. For most visitors, Thailand’s Koh Samui means relaxation. For Radin, it became his training base for six months of private hell. Working with Pedang, a former Thailand muay thai champion, mornings consisted of a 10km run, followed by five rounds of punching bags. In the afternoon came 40 minutes of weights, a five km run and two more hours of training. He repeated this training day six times every week. “For the first two months, it was torture. Every day, I asked ‘why am I doing this? I’m too old’.” Then as training became more bearable, his confidence lifted. “Six months ago, I was happy to be in the show. Three months later, I was shooting for the semi final. Then, as time passed, I realised, damn, I can do this.”

In muay thai, winning means constant problem-solving. If a fighter is short, you use your reach. Or if he’s six feet three inches tall, chop him down.

“When you see a big tree, you don’t look up. You cut down here”, he says, pointing to his legs. “When they fall down, they are a lot shorter than you.” Radin visualises each match, studying the mathematics of his opponent, estimating how many kicks or punches they’ll throw. “It’s like playing chess. You move one step, but you see three or four steps ahead.”

Then it’s time for the knockout kick. To date, Radin has won 32 of 45 fights by knockout. Making a “knock on wood” gesture, he says he’s never been knocked out. He has lost though, five times. Sometimes at night, he sees the faces of the victors. Never mind the cracked ribs, fractured legs, or his perennially busted nose, losing is the feeling he fears most.

Radin feels his Iban heritage most in the ring. He remembers at nine years old, sneaking out to watch the jungle training for kuntau, the Iban martial art and being inspired by the evening stories of his elders, the real head hunters. Now a family man, he says his kids, aged 17, 12 and five years old, consider him a friend. Despite his instinct to protect them, he still wants them to experience a match, at least once: “Part of my culture is, you must have heart. It’s one thing I want to build in my kids. You step in the ring for self-discovery. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, just finish the five rounds.”

Excited about his one last test, Radin expects The Contender Asia atmosphere to be super-charged. “You put 16 tigers in a cage. All cocky, confident guys who think they can win it. How do you think it will feel?” Yet he says training with former muay thai world champions impressed on him how humble and friendly they were.

Ultimately though, each new challenge is personal for Radin. “When fighting in the ring, it’s not about the opponent. I fight my fear, and my ego.” And when the time is right, he knocks them out.

Has muay thai changed since you were fighting?
It was a totally different league, the sport was not as popular outside of Thailand. Now it’s a recognised world sport, and is in the SEA Games and the World Martial Arts Games. There’s much bigger competition.

What’s the best way to get involved in the sport competitively?
Our sport has fully recognised national federations, whose websites list the recommended gyms. In Singapore alone, there are over 40 recognised muay thai gyms.

Mohd Azwan Omar or better known as Bob, our heavy weight is back. Though now he is about 10 kg lighter. Bob has been in Koh Samui for 2 months training, losing weight and getting fight experience. About 1 of those 2 months Bob spent in Samui without his team mates, this was a good for Bob though he was very homesick calling his mates up 3x a day but I'm sure he'll now agree the experience was worth the sacrifice and I'm sure he was well taken care of at WMC Gym Lamai.
Bob fought 2 times at Petchbuncha Stadium in Chaweng against Thai opponents and won.

Ismail Ramli lost tonight to Luke Aram but according to our team in Australia, Mail fought a very good fight. Much better than his fight against Azizi last month. Mail didn't step back from the second round onwards. This is really great that he is improving so much and so rapidly, he is only 18 years old and is the youngest Malaysian Tiger! We are very happy with his performance and look forward to seeing him excell in the future. Good job Mail.

Kudin did not fare so well against Chris White. Chris White dominated the fight from the start beating Kudin by points. This match up was supposed to be Ali vs Chris but Ali was out cause he is recovering from an injury.

Our Super Heavy Weight fighter Mohd Azwan or better known as Bob won his first fight at Chaweng Stadium in Koh Samui recently.

Bob faced his opponent in Chaweng Stadium without his team mates as they were busy attending to Ali and other fight matters in UK and KL. But fortunately for this Team Tigers member, we have made many good friends amongst the trainers and fighters at WMC Camp Lamai. Amongst them are Madsue, Runchai and Carly who took care of Bob during his fight. They even treated him to a movie the next day.

Bob knocked out his opponent in the 3rd roud with a kick to his opponents head. Not bad for his first Thai fight.

For those of you who are unaware. Our Malaysian Tigers have been training on and off at WMC Camp Lamai in Koh Samui since November last year. Our fighters are fortunate to be exposed to the very best trainers here. And given the opportunity gain fight experience at Chaweng Stadium. Here, there are is an abundance of experienced opponents, of many different levels. This definitely helps our fighters better themselves.

Mr. Riaz Mehta, Executive Producer of Contender Asia 2and President of Imagine OmniMedia Pte Ltd stated that the continued exposure and promotion of Malaysia with every airing of contender Asia 2 would be worth over USD100 million in media and PR value. The hugely popular and successful Emmy Award nominee Contender Asia Season One was aired in prime time in over 40 countries including the USA, UK, Australia and Asia.

“With Mark Burnet helming the project as producer and being supported by a stellar group of cast and crew, Contender Asia 2 promises to top Season One in terms of quality and a higher calibre of contestants ever seen before on TV,” Mehta added. The illustrious crew include award-winning lighting expert Michael Koepke of Iron Man 1 & 2, and Survivor fame; and award-winning art director Brian Edmonds of Wolverine.

Sixteen of the best Muay Thai fighters from 14 different nations (including 2 from Malaysia) will compete to be the last man standing and earn the Contender title. The fighters will move into the Contender House in the beginning of July and be divided into two groups. Each week, the fighters and their personal dramas as they live and work with each other will be filmed, leading up to the adrenaline pumping elimination face-off in the ring.

Contender Asia will be hosted by local celebrity Marion Caunter and Stephan Fox, the International Co-ordinator and Vice President of the World Muay Thai Council. The 15-episode Contender Asia Season 2 is scheduled to debut on AXN this October.

It won’t all be fighting and personal drama though. The fighters will also be filmed enjoying the beauty and hospitality at the numerous attractions of Malaysia throughout its 40 days of filming such as Mulu Caves, Langkawi, Kellie’s Castle, Penang, Melaka, Terengganu, Lata Jarum in Pahang, Batu Caves and homestays in Selangor, Sabah, Kuala Lumpur and a dinner cruise at Putrajaya.

Kickboxing reality show gives tourism big punch

KUALA LUMPUR: Muay Thai kickboxing reality show Contender Asia will serve as the Tourism Ministry's single biggest channel to promote Malaysia's exotic locations until the end of the year.

Season 2 of the show will start filming next month at 11 destinations, including four Unesco World Heritage sites in Malacca, Penang, Sarawak and Langkawi.

Other locations are Kellie's Castle, Perak; Lata Jarum Waterfalls, Pahang; Batu Caves and homestay programmes in Selangor; tattoo and tribal villages in Sabah; Terengganu beaches; Petronas Twin Towers; and a dinner cruise at Putrajaya

The show, expected to air in October, will have 16 fighters from 14 countries competing for "The Contender" title at a purpose-built set in Petaling Jaya.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said the projected revenue spin-offs from it would not only boost tourism but elevate Malaysia's profile as a modern, progressive, charming and peaceful country.
The show is expected to be watched by 1.2 billion viewers in 60 countries.

Dr Ng said: "I hope Contender Asia can increase awareness of the wonderful sights and sounds of Malaysia as a preferred holiday destination or the best option for a second home."

She said the ministry expected a good promotion for Malaysia My Second Home Programme through the show.

She has directed tourism action councils at the respective destinations to support the filming and minimise red tape when dealing with local authorities.

She was speaking at a press conference to announce that Malaysia would host the kick-boxing show.

Malaysia won the US$1 million (RM3.5 million) bid to bring the cast and crew of Contender Asia through Osys Group, an open system developer which also specialises in biotechnology and aviation industries.

Group managing director Muhd Shahnaz Azm said Malaysia was lucky to have won the bid as 10 countries, including Thailand, where Muay Thai originated, had submitted bids.

Two local Muay Thai fighters will represent the country in this season's show, which comprises 15 weekly elimination rounds followed by the final round to win US$250,000.

Contender Asia was one of the highest-rated reality television shows that achieved the No. 1 spot when it aired on the AXN channel between January and April last year.

Reality TV show set to be a knockout for M’sia

KUALA LUMPUR: The attractions Malaysia has to offer will gain global exposure when reality TV show The Contender Asia Season 2 begins filming next month.

The 15-episode series – on the quest by 16 Muay Thai fighters from around the globe for the coveted title of “The Contender Asia” – will feature the Mulu Caves in Sarawak, Langkawi, Kellie’s Castle in Perak and Penang among its 11 location sites.

The programme will also see shooting in Malacca, Terengganu, Lata Jarum in Pahang and Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur.

The fighters would also be exposed to homestays in Selangor, tattooing and tribal ceremonies in Sabah, the Twin Towers, shopping, infrastructure, nightlife, parks and cultural highlights in Kuala Lumpur and a dinner cruise in Putrajaya.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said the hugely popular programme would give Malaysia a competitive advantage as a top-of-mind holiday destination.

“It also reflects our commitment to promote Malaysia as a preferred venue for TV productions of this stature,” she told a press conference at her office here yesterday.

The US$7mil (RM25mil) production is expected to have an audience of 1.2 billion viewers across 60 countries.

Dr Ng said the projected revenue from aggressive marketing, promotions and related sponsorship packages will give a much needed boost to tourism and the economic growth of the country.

International reality shows filmed in Malaysia previously included Survivor and The Amazing Race Asia.

The Contender Asia Season 2, hosted by Marion Caunter and World Muay Thai Council vice-president Stephen Fox, is scheduled to debut on AXN (Astro Channel 701) in October.

Ismail or better known as Mail surprised the crowd, controlling the match from beginning to end. Which was never expected as Azizi is a very good and experienced fighter. When we had suggested Mail fight Azizi the organisers had later called back and asked whether Mail could get past the first round. I am so proud to say he definately did and went on to win with style. Good job Mail!

Unfortunately Ali lost the World Title fight against Andy Howson of Bad Company.

According to team captain Bernard Radin, it was a good fight with Ali being the aggressor in the initial rounds. In round 2, Ali managed to down Howson with a kick to the head with his left leg, subjecting Howson to an 8 count. Howson walked out with his face pretty cut up, Ali walked out with some swellings on his shins.

It was a good match up and we hope to challenge Howson to a rematch during the Contender Asia Undercard fights in Malaysia.

Ali will be leaving for the UK this Thursday for his big fight against Andy Howson of Bad Company UK for the WMC Muaythai against Drugs World Title.

This will definitely not be an easy fight, well fighting for a World Title is never easy, so we wish Ali the best of luck. We hope he will adjust well to the time change and chilly weather.

Our Malaysian Tiger, Ismail Ramli on the other hand will be fighting Azizi, Kuda Merah. This match will see a relatively new fighter, Mail against a more experienced fighter Azizi from the PDRM. This will prove an interesting fight to watch. So all of you in the vicinity of Stadium Titiwangsa on Saturday the 13th around 8pm. Don't forget to catch Mail and Azizi in action. There are sure to be some more interesting fights to catch so come along and give a little support to our youngest Tiger!

Sept/Oct 08- We sent a Malaysian Muaythai Contingent to the IFMA Muaythai World Championships in Busan, Korea.
Here Khoo Meng Yang brought back a bronze medal for Malaysia.

December 5
Bernard & Ali partcipated in the Thai King's Cup-where both our fighters won their respective fights. It was here that Bernard qualified for his place in Contender Asia 2. Ali and Bernard were honoured to be the first Malaysian's to ever participate in this event.

Dec 08, Jan, Feb, March 09-Our newly created Malaysian Tigers Team attend intensive training at WMC Lamai in Koh Samui, Thailand.
- Our Malaysian Tigers participated in many fights at Chaweng Stadium in Koh Samui.

Jan 12- Faizal beats German reality show celebrity and Boxing Champ-Tony Chaweng. Ali also wins his fight against Pornprom Sorruangsawat.

February 7/8- Boxxwarriors Event in Cheras- Faizal beat Abbas Ahmadi, Zeri beat Iddi Selindang Kuning and Hamdan is defeated by Tengku Shahrizal.

March 21st-Ali is sent to Australia to fight Flip Street in Gold Coast Australia. Ali is defeated by a visibly bigger and heavier Flip but he earned the Australian's respect and has been called back to Australia to fight.

March 15- WMC Gym Malaysia is opened and now serves as base camp fot the Malaysian Tigers.

April 24th-We organized the Contender Asia 2 Malaysian Qualifier in Kota Bharu to choose Malaysia's 2nd representative to CA2.

JIKA jaguh gusti Steve Austin digelar Stone Cold, Mohd Faizal Ramli, 20, pula diberi gelaran The Golden Elbow atau Siku Emas.

Gelaran itu bukan calang-calang atau mainan kerana ia bukan diberi oleh ahli keluarga atau rakan sekampung, sebaliknya ia pengiktirafan oleh peminat sukan Muay Thai atau tomoi di peringkat antarabangsa, sinonim dengan kepakaran Faizal menggunakan kedua-dua sikunya sebagai senjata utama untuk menundukkan lawan.

Lawannya pula bukan setakat peninju tomoi di dalam negara tetapi siku emas Faizal juga sudah menumbangkan jaguh tomoi Thailand, Australia dan beberapa negara Mat Saleh lain.

Awal tahun ini, Faizal menumbangkan peninju tomoi dari Jerman untuk menjulang kejuaraan kejohanan World Muay Thai Championship (WMC) 2009 di Bangkok, Thailand.

Itulah kehebatan anak kelahiran Kampung Gong Kua, Pasir Puteh, Kelantan itu. Ibarat mengesahkan kehebatannya, Faizal terpilih mewakili Malaysia untuk rancangan realiti televisyen The Contender Asia 2 (TCA2) yang bermula Jun depan.

Dia terpilih selepas mengalahkan 18 peserta tempatan lain yang turut mencuba nasib dalam pertandingan Kejohanan Tomoi Super 8 di Kompleks Belia dan Sukan Kelantan, April lalu.

Ditanya perasaannya sebagai anak Malaysia pertama yang bakal menyertai program TCA2, Faizal berkata, dia sangat teruja dan bersemangat untuk mengharumkan nama Malaysia, sekali gus membuktikan peninju tomoi kita sama hebat dengan jaguh negara lain, termasuk Thailand.

"Bagi saya, peninju tomoi kita kini sama taraf dengan peninju luar, termasuk Thailand. Memang mereka (peninju Thailand) diberi lebih banyak pendedahan kerana dilatih sejak kecil.

"Bagaimanapun, peninju kita juga ada kelebihan tersendiri. Hasil pembabitan saya dalam kejohanan di luar negara, secara keseluruhan peminat dan peninju tomoi dari serata dunia kini menggeruni dan mengakui kehebatan peninju kita," katanya.

Menceritakan sejarah pembabitannya dalam sukan tomoi, Faizal berkata, pada awalnya dia bercita-cita menjadi pemain bola sepak profesional.

Namun, minatnya bertukar kepada sukan tomoi selepas ayahnya, Ramli Yusuff, 48, yang juga bekas juara tomoi era 1980-an membawanya menonton satu perlawanan tomoi di Rantau Panjang, Kelantan.

Pada awalnya, Faizal menyimpan wang saku sekolahnya untuk membeli cakera padat video (VCD) perihal latihan asas sukan tomoi dan menontonnya di rumah rakan.

Ini kerana pada ketika itu ibunya, Faridah Ishak, 40, tidak merestui dia mengikut jejak ayahnya berikutan sukan itu dianggap bahaya.

Sampai satu peringkat, Faizal tidak puas hanya berlatih dengan menonton VCD, lalu dia berguru dengan sifu tomoi, Mohd Isa Sulaiman, 59, yang secara kebetulan membuka kelab tomoi dikenali sebagai 'Black Tiger' di kampungnya.

"Saya memperuntukkan masa dua jam sehari untuk belajar tomoi, termasuk 'jogging' mengelilingi kampung sejauh 10 kilometer, selain melakukan senaman menguatkan otot dan tumbukan angin sebanyak 100 kali sehari," katanya.

Faizal berkata, selepas menguasai latihan asas, dia diajar melakukan tumbukan dan hentakan siku terhadap guni berisi pasir kasar seberat 100 kilogram (kg) sebanyak 500 kali sehari.

Namun, paling memeritkannya ialah latihan menguatkan bahagian keting (tulang kering) dan betis apabila dia diminta Mohd Isa melakukan sepakan terhadap sebatang tiang bulat sebanyak 200 kali sehari.

"Akibatnya, keting saya bengkak dan ibu pula nampak. Namun bila ibu tanya, saya beri alasan jatuh kerana bermain bola sepak.

"Saya bukan sengaja berbohong atau hendak menderhaka kepada ibu, tetapi terpaksa berbuat demikian kerana minat yang terlalu mendalam terhadap sukan tomoi.

"Yang seronoknya, ayah tidak melarang, sebaliknya memberitahu, jika saya betul-betul berminat dengan tomoi, jangan berhenti separuh jalan tapi perlu teruskan sehingga sampai ke puncak," katanya.

Selain Faizal, abang, Suhaimi, 22, dan adiknya, Mohd Faizul, 17, turut terbabit dalam permainan sukan tomoi, namun pembabitan mereka berdua masih di peringkat awal.

Faizal berkata, tomoi ada kaitan rapat dengan sukan tinju, namun bezanya ialah tomoi membenarkan penggunaan kaki, lutut dan siku manakala tinju hanya menggunakan tumbukan.

Kejohanan pertama yang disertai Faizal ialah ketika berusia 15 tahun selepas selesai menduduki Peperiksaan Menengah Rendah (PMR).

"Namun, saya sembunyikan perkara itu daripada ibu. Agak mengejutkan kerana saya jadi juara walaupun berdepan lawan lebih berpengalaman. Kejayaan pertama itu sungguh bermakna buat diri saya.

"Ia menambah pengalaman saya dan mengajar saya mengawal ketahanan mental. Bila ada dalam gelanggang, anak muay (tomoi) perlu mengawal marah dan patuh setiap peraturan," katanya.

Menjelang TCA 2, Faizal kini giat menjalani latihan bersama rakan sepasukannya, Bernard 'Headhunter' Radin, 37, dari Sarawak di Gymnasium Lamai di Koh Samui, Thailand, selama sebulan.

Penerbit Eksekutif TCA, Riaz Mehta, berkata rancangan realiti musim kedua itu lebih menarik untuk tatapan rakyat Malaysia kerana ia bukan saja memiliki wakil Malaysia, tapi negara kita menjadi tuan rumah dan tempat penggambaran bermula Jun depan hingga perlawanan akhir pada Januari 2010.

"Pemilihan Malaysia sebagai tuan rumah kepada siri popular yang disaksikan oleh 500 juta penonton dari 40 buah negara ini adalah kerana landskap sesuai untuk latihan serta jumlah peminat seni tomoi yang ramai di negara ini.

"Kita jangka, musim kedua TCA akan ditonton lebih 1.2 bilion penonton kerana ia akan disiarkan ke 50 negara melalui siaran AXN," katanya sambil memaklumkan, 18 peserta dari 17 negara akan bertanding merebut wang tunai RM1 juta.

Malaysia the Surprise Team at Arafura Games

Malaysia hasn’t been known as a powerhouse in the sport of Muaythai but this changed at this year’s Arafura Games. The Malaysian National team was the surprise package of the competition surprising spectators with outstanding results and sportsmanship. The team won two gold medals, one silver, two Bronze and earned an award for being the most improved muaythai team.

Even the Australian team captain had to bow down to Malaysia in the Final after losing a point decision in front of a packed stadium on Thursday night. Malaysia has a great future in the sport and the world has taken note of the Malaysian Tigers.

Arafura Games

The Arafura Games was a success for the Malaysian Muaythai Team. We tasted victory through Ali and Faizal, even Amin's loss in the finals wasn't all that bad as he put up a good fight against Thailand's Panupan Tanjad, the 3 time IFMA World Champion, Ejo who was supposed to compete in the 45kg or even the 48kg category had to jump up to the 54kg category as there weren't enough competitors in the ligter weights. Mail fought an Iranian fighter inches taller and Azwan being in the 91+ category had his first lesson on why he should cut down on the carbs.

Ejo, Mohd Sukri Hasan, had to face Iranian Mohamad, in the 54kg category, pictured above.We decided let let Ejo have a go and jump 2 classes up so he would get experience in the games. The height difference was obvious but nevetheless Ejo put up a good fight. This guy is amazing. I am sure his Iranian opponent was shocked Ejo put up such a tough fight but alas the height and weight difference was just too much to overcome.
Some of Mohd Ali Yaakub's, 57kg and below, more notable rounds was against Japan's Iisaka Kazuki in the semi finals, Ali managed to control the match and knocked out Iisaka in the 3rd round. In the finals Ali came up against New Zealand's Geoff Ahipene, who put up a tougher fight than I personally expected but Ali controlled the match and in the end appeared triumphant procuring the gold medal for Malaysia.
Our Mohd Faizal Ramli, the golden elbow, was amazing. In the semi finals Faizal came up against Kota Tsujimoto in the 71kg and below category. Who would have expected that with all that padding Faizal would still managed to yet again down his opponent with a deadly elbow strike to forehead! Faizal TKOed Kota Tsujimoto of Japan in the second round. In the finals, Faizal came up against Australia's team captain Clayton Collyer,student to the famous John Wayne Parr. Here too Faizal controlled the match and won the gold for Team Malaysia.
Mohd Noramin Ibrahim,63.5kg and below, came up against Australia's Mark Crawley in the semi finals, even though Amin is new to the Malaysian Tigers Team, he really fought well and won his semi final fight against Australia's Mark Crawley. But what impressed us most was his fight against the 3 times IFMA World Champion Thailand's Panupan Tanjad, Amin held his own against Panupan and didn't appear intimidated at all and believe me, Panupan is a very intimidating fighter full of skill and confidence. Amin never gave in he kept up a good fight and we were all really proud of his performance. Even though Amin will have a long way to go to beat Panupan,I'm sure he will get there with a lot of training and dedication.
All in all, Team Muaythai Malaysia did really well, contributing 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 bronze medals to Malaysia's medal tally. That's 6 medals for 6 athletes participating! Tahniah!!!

Ali to fight in England

WMC Muay Thai against Drugs World Title.

Peninju, muay thai tunjuk garang di Sukan Arafura

PENINJU negara dan atlit muay thai negara berjaya menyumbang empat emas kepada kontinjen negara setelah menamatkan cabaran masing-masing dalam Sukan Arafura di Darwin, Australia semalam.

Peninju skuad elit Majlis Sukan Negara (MSN), Eddey Kalai muncul juara kategori featherweight (57kg) selepas menumbangkan peninju tuan rumah, Brett Mather manakala sebutir emas lagi diperolehi menerusi Mohd Fuad Mohd Redhuan yang menundukkan peninju Indonesia, Frejhon Sahuleka dalam kategori light flywieght (48kg).

Perak tunggal sukan tinju disumbangkan Fernandes Paulis Payong yang tewas kepada peninju tuan rumah, Mark Pevinsky dalam saingan final kategori lightweight 60kg manakala gangsa pula diperolehi Effendy Kalai dalam bantamweight (54kg), Mohd Subrie Khamis (flyweight 54kg) dan Khir Akyazian (64A kg).

Sementara itu, peserta negara dalam sukan muay thai (tomoi siam) turut mencatat kejayaan membanggakan apabila memperoleh dua emas, satu perak dan tiga gangsa dalam pertandingan selama tiga hari yang berakhir semalam.

Pingat emas disumbangkan Mohd Ali Yaakub bagi kategori 57kg yang menewaskan peserta New Zealand, Geoff Ahipene manakala Mohd Faizal Ramli muncul juara kategori 91kg(sepatutnya 71kg ke bawah) ke atas selepas menumbangkan peserta tuan rumah, Clayton Collyer.

Mohd Noramin Ibrahim menyumbangkan perak selepas menjadi naib juara kategori 63.5kg, manakala gangsa diperolehi Mohd Sukri Hassan (54kg), Ismail Ramli (60kg) dan Mohd Azwan Omar (91+kg).

Dalam sukan menembak acara pistol, skuad negara memperolehi dua gangsa menerusi kategori remaja, Nee Keong Khoo dan berpasukan lelaki, Kah Hin Foo, Nee Keong Khoo, Kok Leong Cheng dan Chee Yuen Cheng.

Temasya dwitahunan Sukan Arafura yang membabitkan lebih 30 negara rantau Asia-Oceania selama seminggu itu berakhir hari ini.
