No more foreign fighters for local events

Kelantan Teams Not Allowed To Import Muay Thai Exponents

TANAH MERAH, April 19 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan state government has barred state teams from engaging the services of foreign Muay Thai exponents for competitions.

Committee chairman for Human Development, Youth, Sports and NGO's, Abdul Fatah Mahmood said the decision was among terms and conditions set by the state government to allow Muay Thai competitions to be organised in the state.

"The condition however does not apply for international competitions," he told Bernama here today.

He added that the main objective of state to allow Muay Thai competitions was to develop the sport and produce more talented local exponents in the sport.

"If teams engage foreign exponents to compete in local tournaments, it will defeat the purpose of organising such competitions and also result in local aspirants staying away from such competitions," he said.

Abdul Fatah said a seminar would be organised next month for those who are interested in the sport and is expected to be opened by Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

Report on Contender Asia II Malaysia

Two Malaysian fighters set to pick up a spot on The Contender Asia

By NG WEI LOON

THE Malaysian Tigers captain Bernard “Headhunter” Radin is hopeful that one of his team mates will be joining him to feature in the second season of The Contender Asia.

Two other exponents – Mohd Muinuddin Khadir and Faizal Ramli – from the camp based at the World Muay Thai (WMC) Malaysia Gym in Kelana Jaya will be vying for the final slot to appear in the reality show at the Malaysia Super Eight Fights scheduled at Sultan Mohammed IV Stadium in Kota Baru, Kelantan, on April 24.

However, the 37-year-old Bernard said it was hard to predict the eventual outcome as the eight competitors in the fray would be engaging in closely contested bouts.

“We expect that one of them will advance to the final for a shot to earn a place in the show.

“Having earned my place at the King’s Cup meet in Bangkok, Thailand, in December, I am glad that two Malaysians have been given the opportunity to showcase our potential to a wider audience.

“It is a stepping stone for the martial art to move forward in the country. We have a pool of talented young fighters, who compete for a living.

“We need to groom and direct them towards the correct direction,” he added.

Power packed: Bernard (right) in action during training.

Eight competitors are in the fray to secure a berth in the reality show. The other six contenders are Tengku Shahrizal of the Royal Malaysian Police Force (PDRM); Hashim Ramli of Kelab Kayu Kelat Terengganu; Khoo Meng Yang (“Red Dragon”) from TNT Kickboxing Malaysia; Boxxwar-riors Gym duo of Abdul Alif Mohd Zulkifli and Wes Jaya; and Muhammad Azwan Zamri representing M150 Kota Bharu.

World Muay Thai Council (WMC) Malaysia representative Muhd Shahnaz Azmi said they would reveal the draw starting from the quarter-finals knockout stage on the eve of the competition.

For the upcoming assignment, the Malaysian Tigers opted to field Muinuddin when Mohd Hamdan Mokhtar was forced to pull out due to a knee injury.

Based on his hard work throughout the team’s three-month stint at the Lamai Gym in Koh Samui, Thailand, the 22-year-old Muinuddin, also known as the King of Sharks, is rated as the fittest in the squad comprising 13 trainees aged between 17 and 37.

“Earlier, we did not name him because he only weighed in at 59kg. But, he has gained muscle mass and increased his weight by another six kilogrammes over the past three months.

“He always puts in extra effort. Even the trainers had to step in to slow down his training.

“We felt that he is a suitable choice for the challenge because he is a determined fighter who will go the full distance,” Bernard said.

The 20-year-old Faizal is stepping into the ring to protect his unbeaten run of 37 bouts thus far.

During his first overseas training stint in Thailand recently, he chalked up three victories defeating two Thais and a German opponent as well as picking up an Inter-Continental belt in the 70kg section.

“My preparation has been very thorough and I have also brushed up on techniques while training in Thailand.

“Our daily training regime includes a 12km run in the morning followed by another five kilometres in the evening.

“Now, it is about going out there to give my best,” said Faizal, who also hopes to earn a national call up for the biennial SEA Games in Laos at the end of the year.

Following the outing in Kelantan, the Malaysian Tigers will compete at the Asian Martial Arts Games in Bangkok, Thailand (April 25-May 3) and Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia (May 9-17).

Full Contact Freestyle Kickboxing 09-Kota Bharu Kelantan

Three of our tigers fought tonight in Kota Bharu,Kelantan last night. Mat Ropi, Azwan anak Gajah and our King of Sharks Kudin.

Kudin fought very well in fact he was controling the match against Iddi Selindang Kuning, but unfortunately in the third round Iddie managed to plant a well placed punch to Kudin's jaw downing him. To his credit Kudin tried to continue but the punch had overwhelmed him and he wasn't able to continue the fight.

In Mat Ropi's fight against Musang Tabligh, neither side managed to better each other ending the fight in a draw. In Kelantan if neither side is knocked out, the fight is considered a draw.Azwan anak Gajah fought well against the more experienced fighter, Karim Geliga Merah. Even thought the fight ended in a draw, Azwan showed us the what he's got and we are confident with proper training and a lot of cardio work, this guy is going to be a really good fighter.

Our fighters share a laugh with Hanarong, looks like it was at Ejo's expense!

Hanarong is the Chief Trainer at WMC Lamai in Koh Samui. He accompanied our fighters to the Superfights in Cheras in February and was back again in KL for a few days in March to help conduct the seminar organised by WMC Malaysia. When he is down here he takes the opportunity to train our fighters.

Hanarong photographed here with WMC Malaysia Khru Hafiz

Those of you who follow the Contender Asia will remember Hanarong as one of the trainers. As for us,we first met Hanarong in Busan, Korea. At the time he was accompanying the South African team to to the World Championships as he was the South African Coach. I must admit I was rather surprised to see the statuesque Thai trainer as he doesn't resemble the Thai trainer image we are used to. He even had African braids(corn rolls) in he's hair! But 'corn rolls' aside Nong is a really nice & patient guy, we'll probably never see him lose his temper as tell me seriously, aftertaking one look at this guy would you want to make him angry?

Uphill task ahead for Bernard

By NG WEI LOON

SEASONED Muay Thai (kick boxing) exponent Bernard “Headhunter” Radin sprang a surprise by checking in early as one of the two Malaysia representatives in the second season of The Contender Asia.

The Malaysian Tigers captain, who bagged the “Malaysia’s Ultimate Warrior” title two years ago, secured his berth at the King’s Cup meet at Bangkok, Thailand, in December.

Crowd favourite: Shahrizal winning the Malaysia Super Four Fights as part of the International Muay Thai Superfights at Stadium Malawati in Shah Alam last July.

The 37-year-old Sarawakian was in uncompromising form and ended his German opponent’s campaign with a convincing technical knockout victory. Bernard delivered his trademark power-packed kick and injured his opponent’s ribs just a few seconds into the three-minute first round.

World Muay Thai Council (WMC) Malaysia representative Muhd Shahnaz Azmi said Bernard had performed beyond expectations and they were delighted that an ideal Malaysian ambassador with outstanding personality had made the cut.

“Bernard has shown his courage and has not allowed his age to prevent him from advancing in The Contender Asia. There is no doubt that he is very determined to go as far as possible. Deep inside him, he is aiming to progress to the semi-finals. However, he will have an uphill task ahead to stamp his mark against younger competitors with better physique. Since November, he has been training diligently with the Malaysian Tigers squad at the Lamai Gym in Koh Samui, Thailand, to prepare for the challenge,” Shahnaz added.

The Malaysian Tigers, comprising 13 exponents aged between 17 and 37 years, opted to be based in Thailand to gain exposure with quality sparring sessions and regular competitions, with at least a bout in a month.

Take that!: Shahrizal (right) taking on Bernard Radin at the Malaysia Super Four Fights at Stadium Malawati in Shah Alam last July.

Two hopefuls – Mohd Muinuddin Khadir and Faizal Ramli – from the camp returned home with the team recently to vie for the final slot to feature in the second season of the entertaining reality show at the Malaysia Super Eight Fights scheduled to be held at the Sultan Mohammed IV Stadium in Kota Baru, Kelantan, on April 24.

Another six competitors attempting to qualify are Tengku Shahrizal of the Royal Malaysian Police Force (PDRM); Hashim Ramli of Kelab Kayu Kelat Terengganu; Khoo Meng Yang (“Red Dragon”) from TNT Kickboxing Malaysia; the Boxx-warriors Gym duo of Abdul Alif Mohd Zulkifli and Wes Jaya; and Muhammad Azwan Zamri, representing M150 Kota Baru.

Based on current form, Shahrizal will be starting off as the favourite, and he indicated he is a frontrunner when he knocked out younger opponent Hashim in the final of the Malaysia Super Four Fights as part of the International Muay Thai Superfights at Stadium Malawati in Shah Alam last July.

Underdog Khoo with vast experience and renowned for his everlasting endurance in the ring will be out to spoil the party.

Shahnaz also hinted that Faizal, who is known as the “Golden Elbow”, would be another fighter to watch out for.

Connected: Khoo (right) in action against Hashim Ramli at the Malaysia Super Four Fights at Stadium Malawati in Shah Alam last July.

“The eight challengers will be divided into two teams — Malaysian Tigers and Boxxwarriors Gym — and they will be drawn into the quarter-finals elimination rounds.

“We are expecting an open and closely contested affair, and the best Malaysian will join Bernard in action in the highly anticipated show,” he added.

Thai Trainers

The renowned trainer Hanarong has a rest between training sessions. Our fighters are truly honoured to be exposed to and trained by so many great and experienced coaches.

Our new trainer Shon, will be back in Malaysia to train our Tigers on Tuesday.

Pi Dang Devy, there are three brothers from the Devy family at WMC Lamai in Koh Samui. Pi Dang was Bernard's trainer during his recent training stint in Thailand. Pi Dang was a Champion Boxer and Muaythai fighter. He was also Southern Thai Champion and Rajadamnern Champion.

Santos Devy, Pi Dang's brother and former Southern Thai Champion.

Nen, brother to Santos and Pi Dang. Also known as the 'Little Monk' as he was a monk as a youth. He was also a Southern Thai Champion.

The trainer above is 'Gay'. Gay is his name not his disposition!

Mardsue, the Malaysian Tiger boys love this guys, trying to persuade us to bring him out to Malaysia to train them! I doubt now, with his new fight accomplishments, that he'll be available as a trainer for some time.

Above,Mat Ropi
When we scout for fighters, we aren't necessarily looking for athletes who are at their peak now. We are looking for athletes who show the most potential to improve and develop. From there, will provide them with the best coaches and training conditions.
